Koshigaike Pond(孝子ケ池)

The gourd-shaped Koshigaike Pond provides an idyllic setting for a stroll in the Nakayama Shichiri area of Gero. The pond is within the Hida Kisogawa Quasi-National Park and is popular for its seasonal scenes of cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, autumn leaves, and winter snow.

The literal translation of Koishigaike is “Pond of the Filial Son.” The name comes from a local folk tale about a poor man by the name of Sakon who traveled far north to Lake Biwa, near Kyoto, to fulfill his dying mother’s wish to drink some of its water. Sakon procured the lake water and stored it in a cylinder of bamboo. When he returned home, he discovered that his mother had already passed away, and he collapsed in grief. The water that spilled out of the bamboo cylinder at that moment, along with the tears he shed, became Koishigaike Pond. Sakon is venerated at Kadohara Shinmei Shrine, a 5-minute drive from the pond.

下呂の中山七里地区にひょうたんの形をした孝子ケ池があり、のどかな散策が楽しめます。

この池は飛騨木曽川国定公園内にあり、桜、あじさい、紅葉、冬の雪景色など四季折々の景色が人気です。

孝子ケ池を直訳すると「孝行息子の池」。

この名前は左近という名前の貧しい男が琵琶湖の水を飲みたいという瀕死の母親の願いを叶えるために、はるか北の京都近くの琵琶湖まで旅した地元の民話から名付けられました。

左近は湖の水を汲み竹筒に貯めました。家に帰ってみると母親は既に亡くなっていることが分かり、左近は泣き崩れました。

その時に竹筒からこぼれた水と、彼が流した涙が孝子ケ池となりました。

左近は池から車で 5 分の門原神明神社に祀られています。
