Bouldering in Kanayama(金山のボルダリング)

The Kanayama district of Gero is a popular destination for bouldering enthusiasts and rock climbers. There are three main areas for bouldering and two indoor climbing spaces, unnewtwo and Reboulder.

The main bouldering areas are:

• Kiba-iwa, or “fang rock,” a scenic site with numerous boulders, including one that curves upwards and ends in a point like a tusk
• Asodani, a forested mountain valley with large, almost-spherical boulders
• Kado Kakurekigan, downstream from the Hichiso Dam, with rugged boulders that are relatively easy to grip

Some of the boulders, such as those at Kado Kakurekigan, were formed by a volcanic eruption 65 million years ago. Others have been shaped by ancient flows of water and geological phenomena over the ages. The Hida Kanayama Climbing Commission offers detailed diagrams and tips for scaling the major boulders at each of these sites, as well as a ranking of their difficulty levels.
