The Great Cedar of Gero(下呂の大杉)

An ancient cedar tree once stood on the grounds of Moriminashi Hachiman Shrine. It was known as “the Great Cedar of Gero.” The tree had a circumference of 13 meters and was supposedly more than 2,000 years old.

The cedar tree was one of the famous sights of Gero referenced in the name of Mutsumi (“Six Views”) Bridge. It survived a devastating fire in 1859 that destroyed many parts of the shrine. However, successive fires in the twentieth century left the cedar weakened, and it toppled in 1990. Noguchi Ujo (1882–1945) paid tribute to the cedar in a poem that was part of his Ballads of Gero series.

A younger tree now occupies the place where the Great Cedar once stood. A plaque with an old photograph memorializes the famed tree.
